Paperless

Recently we had a job going to press. There wasn’t a more elegant way to layout the spreads on each sheet. There was no way around it. A lot of perfectly good paper stock would get thrown out and wasted.

Coincidentally the office has been slightly more vocal about wanting to become more “green”. However, talk is just that. Maybe we were waiting for an opportunity to present itself. Regardless, it dawned on us this was the perfect opportunity to turn waste into something useful. Functional even.

The catch? We had about 30 minutes to design something. Ah, crap. Well, it’s not like we don’t know what a deadline is like. So we hit the drawing board like a ton of bricks. Poster? Maybe. Trifold? Not enough time. Flyers. Sure, but what? No time to be clever or design savvy. Bust out the Helvetica. Big headers. Need a good catch phrase. Content. Content? What are we trying to say? Global warming. It’s here. But what proves global warming? Scientific facts? Yeah, I suppose so. Can we call an authority right now and get facts emailed to us right now? Yes? Holy cow, this might work. After a couple much-needed breaks and one or two lucky sparks, we actually nailed down three seperate flyers in roughly 20 minutes. A quick phone call to the pressman kept the job on hold an extra 15 minutes. From start to finish we had three fresh sheets added to the unused spaces. No extra charge.

Roughly two weeks later a delivery man unloaded twelve boxes on flyers. Enough to pass around town. Yes, it’s still paper eventually being thrown away, but I’d like to think circulating paper with some facts about our world is slightly better than dumping perfectly good paper drectly from the press to the dumpster.

Each flyer’s header:

  1. Just a Pipe Dream.
  2. Everything’s Cool.
  3. Just Chill Out.

Perhaps slightly sarcastic, but it’s the mood we’re going for. Underneath each is a list, completely random, detailing modern day changes to our climate and how it’s effecting the immediate environment. From melting mountaintops to record temperatures, they all fall under the category of “Factual Examples of a Raised Temperature”.

All in all, it was less than an hour’s work. After it was done, we were already on to an identity project. It’s amazing how a quick decision can alter the day.

Clamoring
