Strife & Power in the New Middle East. A map.

(02/28)

Baseball card sells for…lots. 2 inches of cardboard glory. [kottke]

(02/28)

Balloon at 85,000 feet. Gave me butterflies looking at the last few.

(02/27)

Gore a power whore? What do we do to the one man trying to make positive change? Well of course we verbally attack him. What else?

(02/27)

Image Replacement

And then there was Swifr. (Is Web 2.0 the end for the letter "e"?) Thanks to the labors of Daniel Mall, Mark Huot, and Jon Aldinger, us lucky designers have a quick, easy, and Standards' way about adding flare to imagery.

Beautiful recap of the future-branding in Idiocracy. This is what I was going to write about next! Well…scratch that off my list.

(02/27)

The other side to the new debate fueled by Mr. Titanic. Ironically, the man who penned “I’m King of the World!” is disputing the other man who claimed it first.

(02/26)

Boom.

(02/26)

Levelry. Up, up and away, I say.

(02/26)

Hatin’ on Miss Sunshine. People, can we please stop dwelling so much on these details? Did you enjoy the movie? Did you not? That’s all that matters.

(02/26)

M&Co 5 O’Clock. If that special someone in your life just happens to be a designer, you might consider this as a gift. They’ll love you for it.

(02/26)

Also, the visualization of the blogosphere. Scripting News is the center of the universe? Ack!

(02/26)

Mapping science. Wish somebody could have showed me this in grade school.

(02/26)

A visit to the Glasgow School of Art. Okay I’d like to move to England.

(02/26)

The designer stereotype. All I’ve got going for me is the beard stubble, and only because I’m lazy in the shaving department. Everything else seems to strike against the design-dress code.

(02/26)

Jesus & James. Something tells me Mr. Cameron is trying to stir up the pot.

(02/26)

The unifying of a brand. Literally.

(02/23)

Pulp Fiction as type. DOES HE LOOK LIKE A BITCH?

(02/23)

Beijing bridge.

(02/23)

Keyboard + Typewriter = ?

(02/23)

5,000 year-old, 6-foot tall female skeleton found, complete with prosthetic golden eyeball. Wink, wink.

(02/22)

Jesus Christ Loves You. Moreso than most Right-wingers.

(02/21)

W.W.G.W.B.D. Not even posting this for political reasons—just think it’s a brilliant information synopsis.

(02/20)

GD Undersea Frontiers Ad. Love the colors and pattern.

(02/20)

Yet another Freedom Tower redesign. Once you start talking “office space” and “politics” it’s all over.

(02/20)

Why Bush won’t change his mind. The more facts you give, the harder you press, the further he recedes. Apparently.

(02/20)

On the subject of front page clutter design, interesting write-up on Amazon.

(02/20)

World’s largest drain hole. Insert rude joke here.

(02/20)

Wildcard.

(02/20)

UN’s new international radiation symbol. It seems less of a symbol and more like an instruction manual. Of course, its value is based solely on its effectiveness. If I hear of a group of people running away from a gigantic fan in terror, I’ll consider it a failure.

(02/20)

Brave New World book cover. My God, he is a machine!

(02/20)

Interesting take on a logo…I like the cross-hatching and drop shadows, personally.

(02/20)

The Simpsons Movie. I haven’t watched regularly in years, yet I’m all giddy like a schoolgirl watching the trailers.

(02/20)

Lazy Bastard

Before I moved to Orlando, I had very poor habits. I wasn't the most responsible person in the world. In fact, I really had no idea how to handle myself, let alone my money. Of course, it wasn't something I could see at the time. It's amazing how much your eyes open when your get out of the boiling water.

Flight Density. I would love a copy of this.

(02/19)

Roberto Clemente, 1972 Topps baseball card. Remarkably quiet moment, unlike usual Topps action shots. [do]

(02/19)

Bulb burn-out bubble.

(02/19)

A book covers blog. I must bookmark it and look at often. [ace jet 170]

(02/19)

Beautiful shreds by Ed Fella.

(02/19)

Just finished watching Scorcese’s The Aviator. Great film. Very interesting character, this Howard Hughes.

(02/19)

Grid Systems in Graphic Design by Josef Muller-Brockmann Recommended to me after venting frustration to Tim over struggles in handling the grid, I instantly connected with the instructions of order, precision, and creativity. I couldn’t read through it in one...

Douchebag Dad throws son’s wrestling apponent across the mat. Later that night, the 20-foot tall Jolly Green Giant kicked him in the nuts.

(02/16)

House passes resolution against Iraq plan. I want to believe this can change the tide, but I just can’t. Yet. Talking the talk is a start.

(02/16)

$82 for a voting machine. Or an extremely good steak dinner. You decide.

(02/16)

Fireworks. Or a victory after battle? Wow.

(02/16)

Iraqi city of 300,000 a ghost town. And I still hear people say the worst is yet to come. God help us all.

(02/16)

Chinese man sentenced to death for…ant scam. Never thought I’d put those particular words together in one sentence.

(02/16)

Audioslave split. More like Chris Cornell splits from band. Well that sucks. I was a huge fan. I respect his decision, but quite frankly am pretty annoyed. He doesn’t seem content anywhere, and I could care less for his solo material. Their last album was their best work to date.

(02/16)

Viral

I was browsing Digg tonight, when I came across this interesting article about Nine Inch Nails. Apparently, somebody found a USB drive in a restroom during a NIN concert in Portugal. It contained one file - a previously unreleased NIN track titled "My Violent Heart." Random event? Possibly.

Church? That’s not a church. This is a church. For someone with faith, this must be even more awe-inspiring.

(02/15)

New concept billboards for Mustang. I gotta say, this would be eye-catching on the road.

(02/15)

For the record, I’m now convinced I’m one of only possibly six US citizens that doesn’t give a crap about American Idol. Further research will not be necessary.

(02/15)

Got MILK? Pricetag alone would scare off the natives.

(02/15)

The Bus Ball.

(02/15)

What can the future of car design give us? More of the same, or some real innovation? “Someone also pointed out that socialists build the infrastructure and capitalists build the vehicles. Which I hadn’t thought of before.” Figures.

(02/15)

Caution: Golden Gate Park.

(02/14)

Cleopatra’s butt-ass ugly. I love historical findings.

(02/14)

Research

A design professor once told me how much I'd learn about the world through this gig. I didn't think too much of it at the time. How much can one learn spending hours working in grids, HTML, colors, fonts, and inspiration? Well, probably some, but not a lot.

I wanted to share this with you guys. Yes, I broke web design rule #3: Don't ever use bloody handshakes. One of the first web sites I designed out of school, before I understood the fruitiness of the handshake image...hey, it works well enough.

(02/13)

Grand Canyon Skywalk becoming a reality. Cool, and completely unneeded. We really need a way to marvel at the Grand Canyon while 30 feet beyond the canyon's edge? I've been there. It's enough to look out. Trust me. In the spirit of "Because we can!" I say, "But why?"

(02/13)

Interesting critique of the WIRED magazine redesign. It's impossible to hit the mark in every way for everyone, but it sounds like it was needed, regardless of negative points. Maybe I should start reading WIRED again?

(02/13)

Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us. This one's making the rounds today, but it's just so good I couldn't help joining the bandwagon. Talk about breaking down the Web in 5 minutes. Wow.

(02/13)

The Traveler.

(02/13)

Emigre Type Specimens Volume I. If only I was better friends with ol' Ben Franklin. Unfortunately he hates my ass. God I'd love to own this book.

(02/13)

Zodiac is getting a unique marketing campaign. [do] This is borderline grotesque to me. On the one hand, I'll be interested to see the movie, having been directed by David Fincher. On the other hand, this marketing technique strikes me as repulsive. I understand the need to get people's attention, but they've essentially turned a real serial killer into a marketing stunt. From what I can tell, this individual existed, killed numerous innocent victims, and was never caught. Now we decide to use this very character to market to others. There is a fine line when marketing a movie about a real, and recent, killer.

(02/13)

Classic Looney Tunes online! The first page is a disaster, but well worth it. [drivethru]

(02/13)

Design DriveThru. New one on me, looks good.

(02/13)

The Madness of Mission 6. Kind of reminds me of working the holiday season at the liquor store.

(02/12)

Guiness shortfilm by Studio aka. Beer! Harray beer! [do]

(02/12)

Phil Collins is comic sans? S-s-studio, ouch.

(02/12)

How to shower. Woo woo!

(02/12)

I overheard a debate between two people over participation in American wars. Pro-war stated, "Whether or not the war is justified is a moot point. It's our duty as US citizens to uphold the Constitution, and if our president feels to do that we must fight in Iraq, than so be it."

While the anti-war individual started going on about his reasons against the war (we've all heard them by now), I had a thought:

If in the colonial days of America, if our founding fathers had been dutiful citizens to the British crown--while disregarding their honest feelings about their ruler--we wouldn't have an America to begin with. Now I obviously don't compare the British monarchy of the time and our current Administration, but I find the thought important that we must voice our concerns to the heavens if we feel somehow things have gone awry.

(02/12)

Save the Senator Theatre. I hate seeing history at risk of the wrecking ball.

(02/11)

Black Roses by Lure. That oozes sweetness.

(02/09)

Jonathan Ive. He designs stuff, apparently.

(02/09)

Stockholm metro. Wow.

(02/09)

Lovely informational design depicting baseball salaries and their outcomes. Check out the Marlins.

(02/09)

Library smut. Not what you think.

(02/09)

Quantum computers on the way. Finally, can somebody rescue Scott Backula?

(02/09)

Jockey gets a new look. Can't say I'm on-board with the logo. Looks like a diagram of a water's flow upon flushing.

(02/09)

Space debris will kill us all! I find this kind of humorous. Must be in our nature to expand into every new territory we can find. As for the space litter, wouldn't they burn up upon entering the atmosphere?

(02/08)

Happy Cog redesigns. I loves me the masthead.

(02/07)

Greatest CSS tip ever. If you think about it, we could all be CSS geniuses if we just stuck to this simple rule. [Cliff]

(02/07)

History Doesn't Care

The history books will tell the story. So says our current administration. They seem to love using the "history book" excuse. It seems nobody's opinion matters, only the big book of the past. Only history can judge our choices.

Twists & Turns may break my bones, but gosh I like this photo.

(02/07)

The Design Disease. We are all zombies!

(02/06)

Michael Bay: the Music Video. Because we love it when he blows shit up. Rar!

(02/06)

Cliff gives a summary of Refresh 06 to us losers who didn't attend. Damn you Miami weather!

(02/06)

The Firefly Press via Acejet 170.

(02/06)

Palm Springs = design vacation?! Looks that way. Time for a road trip with the girl!

(02/06)

Toyota enters the weird, wide world of NASCAR. That sentence is English, but damn if I sure as hell don't understand it.

(02/06)

Speaking of Super Bowl commercials, this one still tickles my funny bone. Ouch.

(02/05)

Top Five Super Bowl ads. Didn't see that one coming. Did you? Minor notes: The Coke commercial isn't new. Sweet, but not new. The K-Fed commercial is repulsive. He doesn't deserve to even be in a commercial selling hemeroidal cream.

(02/05)

Survival altoid tin. Don't leave home without one.

(02/05)

Influence Vs. Inspiration. Read it, then post a comment.

(02/05)

The man who designed currency. Awesome read, great visuals. Stole this link from Greg only because it's too good. Hope he doesn't mind.

(02/05)

A wonderful essay on sustainability, recycling, and the need for less packaging. This Noisy Decent guy gets my brain working.

(02/05)

Short documentary on GreenBuild, shedding some light on the process of sustainability. [core77]

(02/05)

Great design: door stopper. I love simplicity.

(02/05)

McDooDoo's coffee better than Starbucks?! Now that's hilarious.

(02/05)

A complete list of brands owned by Coca-Cola, circa 2003. "Bimbo Break"?

(02/02)

I'm down with granny panties. Actually, no, I'm really not.

(02/02)

Sever storms in central Florida make the news. I only mention this because it was slightly due north of me last night. Kind of strange to read about it on national news the next day.

(02/02)

Trailer for Knocked Up, the new movie by the creator of 40 Year Old Virgin. Need I say more? (02/02)

Tidy up, so says IKEA.

(02/01)

Kevin Smith's Top Ten Movies of 2006. Would he lie? Snooches, I say to that. [kottke]

(02/01)

Guilty

Ah, yes. Do I love huge corporations. Especially when they make record profits. ExxonMobile, you old son of a gun! How did you do it?! Aside from making every consumer on planet Earth bend over to touch their toes, I really don't know how you did it. Congratulations!

ExxonMobil posts largest annual profit in US history. It's downright disgusting how little we care about this. No way in hell a company like Exxon deserves to rake in this much. Thanks for the gasoline price drops, how kind of you.

(02/01)

Viral marketing for the Aqua Team Hunger Force movie shut down part of Boston. Two guys were arrested. The movie better not suck.

(02/01)

Niklaus Troxler, graphic designer. Posters. Goodness. [do]

(02/01)

New performing arts center in Dubai unveiled, designed by architect Zaha Hadid. The dramatic lines and wind-tunnel look is stunning.
