Inspirability
by PASH, Matt Pashkow
Given to me most graciously by my friend Heather, my nose has been buried in this book for a couple weeks now. Take 40 well-known designers, sit them down, and interview them about inspiration. Sounds simple. The answers are fantastic. I love learning how other designers find their inspiration. Great book for quick glances or long reads.

(01/31)A brief overview of the A tag. Sometimes we have to remember the basics.
(01/31)Zodiac movie site. Check out the timeline. Hope this David's next Fight Club, and not the next Panic Room.
(01/31)Freedom Fuels, a documentary about renewable fuels. And it's free.
(01/30)The Last Question. In case you have time for a quick science fiction tale.

(01/29)A building as a branding tool. I like the Mikimoto Ginza 2 building, personally.
(01/29)Top 10 Fonts, composed by leading designers and typographers. No real surprises, but interesting nonetheless.
(01/29)I just installed MovableType 3.34. I'm not a huge fan of constantly updating MT. I tend to stick with one version. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Except two weeks ago I suddenly found myself deleting 30-40 spam comments a day. Fuck that, I have better things to do. In my research I realized pretty quickly Six Apart had implemented spam-blocking features. So I buckled down and downloaded the latest version. To my surprise, installation was a breeze and a snap. Of course now my cruft-free urls are broken, but hopefully I can figure that one out again soon enough.
(01/29)There seems to be something designers tend to overlook these days. I've fell victim to the same forgetfulness. We get so wrapped up in making the presentation as beautiful and perfect as possible, we forget a simple notion of the human condition: emotional connection.
Youtube girl sings the 20s with a sweet, sweet voice.
(01/29)Southwest redesigns their front page. I hope it continues throughout the site.
(01/29)Interview with Yves Behar. I'm just now learning about this amazing mind.
(01/26)Trails. Metal + Chemistry + Gravity + Time = Beauty.
(01/26)"Obviously, it's not a good idea to fuck with the DMV." I've always wondered about that: does the DMV play mafia, ruining the auto-lives of those that enter their fury?
(01/26)Damn Interesting going postal. I wish them all the best.
(01/26)Pickle surprise. Kids, don't do drugs.
(01/26)State of the Union Address infographic. Compare the amount of times specific words or phrases were said. Anyone see a trend?! (Might require registering, but I got in just fine without)
(01/25)Pop quiz info: that Old Spice commercial with Bruce Campbell was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the dynamic duo who also directed my favorite film of 2006 - Little Miss Sunshine. They know their stuff. Look for a chainsaw by the fireplace!
(01/25)
Fly blowing a bubble. Check out the others in this set. Fantastic!
(01/25)Twilight Angel now on IMDB. I designed the film's poster. Way to go Dwayne!
(01/24)Pantone Swatch Book turned Font Explorer. I gotta get me one of them. [DO]
(01/24)Good breakdown of the new AT&T branding. A little late in the game for this kind of link, but I found it an interesting read. [noisy descent]
(01/24)The Ana Digi. My new favorite watch.
(01/24)I found this while scanning a CA Design Annual from ten years ago. I thought of the iPhone. I laughed. I'd like to think they helped us first, then we helped them.
Airport security detains WW2 vet because they thought his Congressional Medal of Honor was suspicious. Dear God, are we all surrounded by idiots all the time?
(01/23)I grew up in the age of the Compact Disc. Records were always somewhat foreign to me. More than anything, I appreciated them more for their cover designs than sound quality. Since we've entered the digital age of music collections, I've been wondering about the state of album design.
With a little help here and there, I've added live comment previewing. A small, but welcomed, addition.
(01/23)Tiki Aquarium. Now all I need are the goldfish.
(01/22)Zeldman vs. Veen via Wii Boxing. God Almighty, I've gotta get me a Wii, already!

(01/22)Ready mechs. Build yours today.

(01/22)Interview with an Iraqi priest. "I don't think flowers fight one another in a garden." Amen.
(01/19)Driving + Ice = YouTube fun. [Marc]
(01/19)Hands-on with iPhone. There are already so many lovers and haters of this little item.
(01/19)Petition to stop "Dubya Library". I know these two words are English, but I just don't understand them together.
(01/18)I can't take anyone wearing a cowboy hat seriously. I'm sorry, I just can't.
(01/18)I think God just decided toasters needed a new look. Yipes! Gimme two!

(01/18)Bill-Jeff gives up his lollipop. Something tells me he has twenty more in his back pocket he's not telling anyone about.
(01/18)In the 50's, everybody smoked. It wasn't even questioned. It simply was "in". 50 years later the whole world knows what smoking does to the body. Will cell phones be the next cigarette? An item everybody must have and use on a daily basis, without knowing the consequences of constant cell phone wave bombardment 50 years from now? Nah.
(01/18)Rydia from Final Fantasy II (SNES) via craft beads. More.
(01/18)In case you missed it once, The Bible has been redesigned. I find myself appreciative of the imagery choices. Modern, yet thoughtful. Revelation gives me a chill.
(01/18)Dream poster. Interpret dreams via a printed space.
(01/18)I've just dove head first into RSS feeds. I went a little crazy adding all my favorites. I realized pretty quickly that Everomp needed one. Please forgive me since I'm just now learning about setting up RSS properly, but I'll work on it. Mmkay?
(01/18)Colbert breaks down the AT&T/Cingular nonsense. Brilliant, and yet it's still all nonsense.
(01/17)Tokyo at night. One of my top five places to visit. Wow.
(01/17)Beatles on iTunes. All you need is love, and DRM.
(01/17)Borat is dead. Makes sense and is probably a good choice. The best comedians are those that don't have to dwell on one idea for the rest of their careers.
(01/17)Extracting water from thin air. Imagine how this could help communities in areas where water is scarce.
(01/16)Blue Note album covers. Just bought the book, my new favorite.
(01/16)We have a new icon.
(01/16)Carmax redux. A dash of white space; a splash of grid; and a sprinkle of (less) text.
(01/15)Poster for Paris Je T'aime. Love. Can't say much more.
(01/15)I hate this idea that somehow we're propped up over all other living things in this world. Are we unique? I think so. But we're certainly not God-like over the Earth. Hell, we of all species have the greatest chance to fuck the world over. It just takes a little greed. Which is why I'm not a fan of the term "artificial". I understand the need for it: to distinguish between something made by our hands and something created by the Earth (not by our hands).
Beer and calories. Because it's just good to know.
(01/15)When I think about design, my mind sometimes wanders. I think about the world at large and how everything man-made, to a certain degree, is designed. Whether it's 2 minutes of thought, to 2 years, every single object man has created has been designed to fit a need or purpose.
Rosa Loves. T-shirts with purpose. That's what I'm talking about.
(01/15)Gotham. Having used this font extensively in 2006, I can safely say it's a wonderful font.
(01/15)Google Earth is evil? You knew this would happen eventually.
(01/15)Pig stamps. Oink oink!
(01/15)Preserve the ethnosphere. Preserve ourselves.
(01/15)Microsoft cripples HTML rendering in email. Are they trying to be complete fudgers?
(01/12)Hate to be completely random here, but my right arm is killing me at the moment. Cripes. Note to self: don't push yourself to 120% after not weight training for 2 months. Bad.
(01/12)Breakdown of President Bush's public record. Hate to get political, but damn did this not leave me breathless and fearful to what's next on his list.
(01/12)Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water House. This always reminds me design is nature.
(01/12)Jeff Han demonstrates the future of user interface. Giving two fingers never looked so good.
(01/11)"No iPhone for you without a 2 year contract!", says Cingular. I'll pass, thank you. No Apple design is worth selling your soul to Cingular for 2 years.
(01/11)Democrats question Bush's new Iraq strategy. "...the Republicans never asked any questions before, they just gave him a blank check." Oh, snap!
(01/10)I recently shared my thoughts on the recent spark of plagerism discovery via quick eyes and blogging. I received an interesting email from Nick, a designer based in Vancouver, BC. I've only visited Vancouver once--for a day--ten years ago. He claimed to have a logo very similar to the logo I designed for Girl Friday of Miami, Inc. Furthermore, the company's name bares the same two words: Girl Friday. Woah.
Old Spice commercial featuring Bruce Campbell. "If you have it, you'll need more of it."
(01/09)So iPhone is officially official. No more vaporware. I'm not linking like a good blogger to anything dealing with this. What's the point? This news beast is sure easy to find. I'll just say I'm awfully excited at the possibilities of Apple organizing my life. I'm scared to death of how much it will cost me. I already blew $400 on a dead iPod, so forgive my still-seething bitterness. However, a well-designed product will always catch my eye, so here's to many phone calls by Apple in the future. (Apple TV looks like fun, too.)
(01/09)White space matters. And I don't mean mayo.
(01/09)Old car wiring schematics. Hand-drawn auto-goodness.
(01/09)Poster designed by Woody Pirtle.
(01/08)Word as image. I worked on a class project years ago based on the same idea. At the time I thought it was kind of a silly project. Looking back, it was one of my most rewarding.
(01/08)Oprah spends millions on education in Africa. Why? Because she can, thankfully.
(01/08)Iraq oil reserves open to big corporations. Wow. I'm shocked.
(01/08)The girlfriend and I went to the Collective Soul concert last night. What struck me was how genuinely happy those guys were playing on stage. There's nothing better than experiencing music from a band that wants nothing more than to be on stage that night.
(01/08)Picasso bought at yard sale for a buck. Lucky couple to blow huge returns on tires and beer.
(01/08)10 Profiters of the Iraq War. Whoever profits from war should have to be in it first, how about that?
(01/06)Organic shapes created with a Sharpee. Holding a line never looked so good.
(01/05)Hooray for me and... well you just have to see for yourself.
(01/05)Final Fantasy parody. The sheer amount of work that went into this is amazing. [Tim]
(01/05)Nigeria debt just about paid in full. Does that mean the average American has more debt than an African nation? Makes sense.
(01/05)Interesting article about resonance and bridge design.
(01/05)Just why is the man sitting on a dead horse? Well what the hell else do you do in the middle of the desert in the 1800s?
(01/05)Dems ban Corporate-paid travel. They will now travel by horseback, sponsored by the Amish.
(01/04)Windfarming. Look at the size of those things.
(01/04)Great cut-to-the-chase article on fitness. In the end, it's all about setting a goal and sticking with it.
(01/04)Paul Schuitema: Visual Organizer. I love starting the work day reading about an amazing designer I've never heard of before. Shame on me. [do]
(01/04)Home Depot CEO resigns with $210 million package. He looks like the type of guy that would blow it all on cheeseburgers.
(01/03)Fat woman gets stuck in cave. Happy New Year, indeed.
(01/02)In a semi-celebration of my Dad's choice to quit smoking, going on 20 years ago now, some pretty interesting information regarding what happens to the human body when you give it a break. (01/02)
Random New Year's post. Pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter.
(01/02)Top 40 Gamecube games. Now that the next generation of consoles have been released, it's the perfect time to pick up some killer last-gen games at insanely low prices. Especially perfect if you're me - a guy who loves gaming but basically gave it up for 3-4 years.
(01/02)War is Over! If you want it to be.
(01/02)It feels like just yesterday I was panicking over the fact that I was running out of fingers on one hand to count the number of years into the new millenium we've come. Now I'm shooting the middle finger with the other hand. Where does time fly? Furthermore, where's all that free time needed to pursue all of our interests?
This is making the rounds, but I thought I should include this graphic depicting the face of each US service member killed in Iraq.
(01/02)Pyramid of Capitalist System. "We fool you." Haha.
(01/02)Indiana Jones 4 a go. For all you constant whiners who talk about Ford's age, I say wait and see. I hope it blows the other three out of the water.
