Inspirability
by PASH, Matt Pashkow
Given to me most graciously by my friend Heather, my nose has been buried in this book for a couple weeks now. Take 40 well-known designers, sit them down, and interview them about inspiration. Sounds simple. The answers are fantastic. I love learning how other designers find their inspiration. Great book for quick glances or long reads.

Bush and Blair banned from the Birthplace of Jesus. Sometimes irony becomes white hot.
(12/27)Person successfully passes phony $200 bill (with George W. Bush on the front!) to cashier and gets $50 in change. I can't blame this guy completely... Just how stupid was this cashier? (Funny note: read the tags on the back of the bill)
(12/27)Photo of the New York Herald press room, circa 1902. Look at the linotype machines!
(12/27)Now that's a pimp suit. More photos of England from 1890 (in color).
(12/27)Inkblot Wallpaper. Name says it all, folks.
(12/27)50 Things We Know Now (but not in 2005). 38 is rather disgusting.
(12/27)Trailer for the second Fantastic Four movie up: Rise of the Silver Surfer. I really hope they don't screw this storyline up. One of my favorite characters of the Marvel universe.
(12/27)African kings. Pretty amazing set of photos. Cultural overload.
(12/26)Graphic design for the movie Death Proof. Love the typography.
(12/21)Ocean's 13 trailer up. 11? A blast. 12? Ugh. 13? Hmmm.
(12/20)Pentagram has redesigned the Saks Fifth Avenue brand. Keeping it simple. Making it complex. [kottke]
(12/20)Ad war by the auto industry. This is hilarious, if not real. Gotta love the Bentley ad. Figures.
(12/20)What does Blake want for Christmas? Something wonderful.
(12/20)First steel beams erected at Ground Zero. Only five years later...
(12/20)m122arts. Hmm, me thinks they design fine things.
(12/20)I plan on updating my portfolio. My digital camera broke on me as I was taking shots of some pieces. Unfortunately, since having moved to a new residence this month (and other unfortunate expenses) I haven't been able to come to grips with purchasing a new camera. I love perfect timing.
(12/20)Zero. Don't understand anything on the site, but it's quite beautiful.
(12/20)Christmas Apple ad. "Pull it into hug harbor." I love it.
(12/20)IKEA founder uses same chair for 32 years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
(12/20)Bush family Christmas card, 70's style. It's like a rainbow puked all over their clothes. (12/20)
Iran switching to euros over the dollar. US currency makes like a submarine and dives, dives, dives!
(12/19)New billboard reflects light rather than produces it. Not a big fan of the billboard, but they're here to stay, so we might as well learn to be more energy-efficient with 'em.
(12/19)Typerson. That's the stuff right there.
(12/19)Fight image spam in Apple Mail.
(12/18)I recently had the privilege of flying to Chicago. What an amazing city. I felt like a fish out of water. Actually, more like a fish out of a small pond, into a gigantic ocean. Lots of room to wiggle, and lots more room to feel intimidated. It was all exciting and inspiring. What did I do wrong? I didn't bring a sketchpad.
New subspecies of "superlion" found. Pretty soon they will rule the planet!
(12/13)Great portfolio by Tanya Merone. I love the way she keeps everything tied into one page. Great way to simplify the process. [simplebits]
(12/13)Pentagram has designed the interface for One Laptop Per Child. File under: When design can change the world. [kottke]
(12/13)I can't read Italian, but this looks like a superb timeline of great design work. Worth a look, and a few clicks.
(12/13)Watchismo. All about watches, basically. [Core77]
(12/11)I saw an absolutely incredible performance by folk artist Vance Gilbert over the weekend. I highly recommend checking out his work. It's my new office choice for the week.
(12/11)Top movie posters of 2006. Personally I'm a sucker for the 40's era poster styling of The Good German and the concept behind Brick.
(12/11)Apocalypto trailer re-cut. "I smell bagels."
(12/11)Incredible marine images. Check out those lobsters! Somebody got any butter?
(12/11)Children See. Children Do. About as powerful a spot on the subject of parenting as I've seen in a long time. Here's hoping I'm a good Dad one day.
(12/08)Logo that evolves with the company. New branding ideas at their best. [kottke]
(12/08)Alive in Baghdad. Enough spoon-fed news about the Iraq War from our wonderful media. Let's hear some truth.
(12/08)The Darfur Wall Project. I'm loving this concept.
(12/08)Sunset over Mars. This should be enough proof that we're living in the future.
(12/08)Awesome overview of Logan, the folks that make those iPod commercials, and other cool, colorful moving part things.
(12/07)I love the iPod. It's done many positive things in the last five years or so. I also hate it. Mine broke. Quickly. I bought my first iPod a couple years ago. Bought my girlfriend one roughly six months after that. Albeit, I used it quite a bit at the gym, it shouldn't have broken down so quickly. Sorry, but this pisses me off. Plus it broke down a week (a week) after my warranty ran out. The guy at the Apple Store laid it out for me, mentioned he couldn't do anything about it, and promptly helped another customer. Angry at him? Nope. Angry in general? Yeah. I expect good design to also hold up under slight pressure. Damnit.
(12/07)Airless Washing Machine. Might have to take the word "washing" out, but somebody get this puppy into mass production.
(12/07)Recipe for design. What? No dash of pepper?
(12/07)Arrested Development available for free. Software installation or not, this show is too good to pass up a second time.
(12/07)"You can't look at this part of the world and pick and choose which countries you're going to deal with." The Iraqi Study Group is out for recess.
(12/06)Japanese Wii Safety Manual. Wack!
(12/06)Let's talk branding. What makes a good brand? I don't claim to know the answer. There are certainly ground rules, but I think a good brand needs to echo a good service, and vice versa. If one plays off another, both are seen in high regards. But shoot, I just gave away my conclusion! So let's start again. Let's talk branding.
Images of real snowflakes. Design by nature, baby.
(12/05)Zombie chickens. That's all I've got.
(12/05)Reusable paper?! As those Guinness boys would say: Brilliant!
(12/04)77 Design Gifts Under $77. Good list in case you're thinking about getting your favorite designer a gift.
(12/04)Did you know Old Navy has altered their logo? What's the point?
(12/03)Civil Defense logo replaced after 67 years. The new logo looks a lot like the new DC Comics logo... [DO]
(12/01)Actual English subtitles to Hong Kong action flicks. "I am damn unsatisfied to be killed this way."
(12/01)"I can't imagine a Playstation 4." Good.
(12/01)AIDS crusader. Makes you realize pretty quickly what really matters in life. Too bad we get caught up in ourselves.
